Phillies vs. Manny (bad act) Ramirez and the LA Dodgers

The Phillies are out west in Dodgerland after a tremendous win on
Sunday in a game that felt like it took forever to play with the 1:47
rain delay right from the scheduled start time of 1:35pm yesterday.

The team needed Chase Utley to snap out of his hitting funk, he sort of
did with the homerun that sealed the Phillies victory but I hope that’s
the start of Utley getting hot again. He seemed to have a lot on his
mind as he came up to bat yesterday at Citizens Bank Park.

Meanwhile, the Mets and the Marlins get a double dose of losing today
and it puts a little distance between the first place Phillies if the
Phillies can come up with a couple wins in LA, namely winning tonight
the first game on Monday August 11.

Is the Phillies still a
powerhouse playoff team, I am not that convinced that they are. They
have been winning but not in a convincing fashion. They have sputtered
terribly offensively lately and have sputtered a number of times this
year for unknown reasons. It just seems that they are not all that
happy as a team out there sometimes.

The 1993 team had fun
along the way, this team seems uptight about something, there are some
really long faces out there perhaps the team should start watching the
Phanatic and just relax a little and have some fun.

The Dodgers are now home for a 10 game homestand with the Phils coming in for the first three of them.

Game One vs LA:

PHI: Kendrick (10-5, 4.37 ERA)
LAD: Lowe (8-10, 4.10 ERA)

Phillies moves starting to irritate, What’s ‘Happ’ening?

JA Happ looked really good in the few times we’ve seen him in a
Phillies pitching role this season. The trade deadline comes and
goes…. They bring Happ back up to the bigs which is a good move, then
they acquire Scott Eyre and ship Happ back down?

These types of
moves are starting to pile up on the Phillies this season. Bad moves,
that is. What do you have to do to stay on the Phillies as a minor
leaguer? Even Ryan Howard and Chase Utley were kept in their minors
spots for a long time before the Phillies brought them up and gave them
the chance to play a couple years ago.

You bring in Eyre who
has been terrible for the Cubs, “flat out terrible” and you move an
upcoming ballplayer like Happ around like a yo-yo to accommodate the
pickup of Eyre.

Scott Eyre comments from Rotoworld.com in the beginning of the season when with the Cubs:

Cubs activated LHP Scott Eyre from the 15-day disabled list
Eyre
has been out all season after experiencing elbow soreness during spring
training. His only value will be in leagues that value holds.

Scott Eyre (elbow) is expected to come off the disabled list on Saturday.
Eyre
is currently sporting a 6.75 ERA in 6 2/3 innings in the minors, but
three of his last four innings have been scoreless. The Cubs will send
down a pitcher to make room for him.

Scott Eyre (elbow) is expected to return from the disabled list on Friday, although it could happen as soon as Wednesday.
Eyre’s
last three innings in Double-A have been scoreless. Sean Marshall could
stick in the bullpen once Eyre comes back, leaving the Cubs with
thirteen pitchers.

Eyre gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings for Single-A Daytona. He should rejoin the Cubs’ pen next week.

Scott Eyre (elbow) threw a scoreless innings Wednesday in his first appearance for Single-A Daytona.
Eyre
could rejoin the Cubs next week, but with Sean Marshall performing well
in relief, there won’t be any need to rush the veteran.

Scott Eyre is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Wednesday.
If that goes well, he could be assigned to start a minor league rehab assignment by the end of the week.

Scott Eyre (elbow) threw a side session on Saturday in Arizona, and is expected to throw another today.
Eyre
has been sidelined for just over three weeks with a bone spur in his
throwing elbow. There’s still not a timetable for his return.

Scott Eyre will resume playing catch today after being shut down for a week due to discomfort in his elbow.
Eyre
underwent an MRI last week to confirm that there wasn’t a stress
fracture in the elbow, and the original diagnosis of a bone spur was
confirmed. He’s unlikely to be back until early May, and with Carmen
Pignatiello struggling in his place, the Cubs could once again look to
Sean Marshall.

Cubs placed LHP Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 23, with a sore left elbow.
Either Sean Marshall or Carmen Pignatiello will claim the bullpen spot vacated by Eyre.

You can’t get more injured than Eyre has been in the beginning of the
year and lasting right up through May, is this guy still able to pitch?
It’s looking like Gillick likes anyone who is about to fall apart, like
Freddie Garcia, and Adam Eaton. I don’t like these kinds of moves!

Phillies didn’t get Manny – that’s great news

If the Phillies somehow traded anyone for Manny Ramirez, I would have seriously considered not going to another Phillies game this year and even more about being a fan of the team. Manny is not funny anymore, he’s pathetic. Such a whiny player who isn’t concerned about ‘team’ play, he is only concerned about himself.

He may be a future Hall of Famer, I don’t know, but his antics are way too much for any normal team to deal with. In a way, LA is a perfect place for him. There are plenty of bad actors in LA, and he’s now one of them.  His style and caliber is something the Phillies and the fans didn’t need. Pat, you said where would we put him, if the Phillies signed him? How about a dunk tank out on Ashburn Alley and have the kids try to sink this clown!

Game two with the Cards tonight, Phillies look to even up with them, Go Blanton!

Phillies stand ‘Pat’ again, who cares about Manny ??

The Phillies seemed like they may make a move, there was some
indication from GM Pat Gillick, but that ended up to be all smoke and
mirrors as the Phillies didn’t make any moves at the end of the trade
deadline. Does this team have what it takes to go to the next level?
The way they are playing now it sure seems like it, but they missed a
chance to go further into a position that will take them deeper in the
playoffs, if they make it in.

Plans were announced that the
Phillies were looking, but nothing came of this in the final day of the
trading bonanza that some teams participated in.

a-rod-and-manny.jpg

Who
would want a guy like Manny Ramirez? He shows no class to a city and
team that paid him millions to play baseball only to act like a total
a$$hole and embarrass himself in the process. I don’t care if the guy
hits 50 homeruns a year, he’s got no class and I hope Phillies fans
greet him with a round of boos to let him know what kind of a guy he
really is!

He may have Hall of Fame numbers, but no one with
that kind of stats should go around and try to be bigger than baseball,
he’s got no class and it shows! Booooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why Oliver Perez looks like Cy Young against the Phillies…

One Number Graphic.jpg

Phillies fall from the Top Spot

I want to know the answer to the question: Why does Oliver Perez look like Cy Young when he faces the Phillies? The Phillies used to have problems with left handed pitching, it appears they still do with today’s performance against Perez and the NY Mets. Perez went 15-10 for the Mets last year but prior to that he wasn’t in anyone’s radar as being a good pitcher. Why does he look so good against the Phillies then?

One reason is that he’s had some success against the Phils already, so he’s in the heads of Phillies batters. The batters have to overcome this, and try not to focus on the past with him and try to figure out how to get hits off of his pitching. Ryan Howard looked particularly terrible, there is no reason for this, and Ryan needs to get more confidence about facing lefties and stop flailing at change ups way out of the strike zone. With two strikes perhaps choke up on the bat a little and protect the plate more, don’t just stand up there and invite a pitcher to make you look foolish.

The Phillies had a runner on third late in the game, there is no excuse not to score him! No can do though for the Phillies, they just strand him out there and no one can bring him home. Drag a bunt down the first base line in a close game, dig, claw, and muscle your way to victory if you have to, I don’t see the Phillies acting this way.

Perez was 3-13 in 2006 for two different teams, there’s a reason for this. Go back to those days and view the video tapes, see his weaknesses because there must be plenty if he used to be a 3-13 pitcher. So my main point of this post is, Perez isn’t that good so treat him that way, go up to the plate and expose his weeknesses, make him throw strikes, don’t chase after his junk balls and the Phillies would have more success against him. Swing when you have two strikes, protect the plate, and make contact.

Ryan Howard needs desperate help at the plate, the batting coach should be working with him tirelessly to solve the problem of his many strikeouts. I know he has a billion rbi’s and many homeruns, but it’s the simple things that win many ballgames. Being able to move a runner with a deep sacrifice, things like this that Ryan is failing at. Ryan is a double edged sword, he’s great with homeruns at times but his all around game really suffers otherwise. I want to see him mature into a better all around player.

One more thing, Charlie Manuel, start respecting players like Carlos Delgado and walk them more rather then them getting the big hit off of the Phillies to beat them. This is what a manager does, he sees a threat, and diminishes it!

Phillies can’t reel in the Marlins

The Phillies were in a great spot down in Florida to get the job done,
and tell the Florida Marlins who was in control of the National League
East this weekend in Miami. That did not happen, the Phillies let the
series slip away and lost the weekend series 2-1 against the younger,
and more hungry Marlins.

After the win on Friday night, the
Phillies stood to command the next two games and they stayed in the
ball games on both Saturday and Sunday, but didn’t do what they had to
do to win. Now the Phillies find themselves in a tie with the Mets for
first, and the Marlins breathing right down their necks only 1/2 game
out of first.

Is this Phillies team the team to beat? They
didn’t play like it this weekend down in Florida! The former NL MVP,
Jimmy Rollins, had a chance to score in the late innings on Sunday’s
game, but for some reason ran at half speed and only ended up a third,
instead of scoring the go ahead run that would have been the win for
the Phillies. I don’t know how this could happen? How could a player
like Rollins just pull up on a two out sure hit to center? Even the
announcers for the game said the same thing, and on the replay they
showed us why. Rollins wasn’t giving it his all, this isn’t the Jimmy
Rollins we know.

Cole Hamels has had now three straight
starts where the Phillies can’t score runs to get him the win. Three
games where they are struggling to produce. Pedro Feliz was a big 0-5
in this game, and he can’t seem to get in sync with this offense
despite him being one of the best third baseman of the last three years
when it is all added up. He is hurting the Phillies offense, and
Rollins just doens’t have that spark in him that he had last year with
his fervent, “We are the team to beat” attitude, if anything he’s
playing like he is beat. What has happened to Jimmy, perhaps he feels
unappreciated by the Phillies in some manner, he was the MVP and yet
doesn’t really get featured that way by the team. Could this be the
reason? Something has changed with Jimmy since his ankle injury and the
Phillies should find out what that is and fix it.

Now the
Phillies face those Mets again, with Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
games. I am anxious to see Blanton pitch for the Phillies, if he goes
out there and gets batted around, the Phillies could be in deep trouble
as they play they have been producing lately hasn’t been too good. Adam
Eaton went to the bullpen, and that’s a good thing, he’s been terrible
all year despite people saying early on that he has had quality starts
this year. The only quality start in my book is a win. That is what
matters and that is what the Phillies need to start doing consistently
again in order that they make the playoffs!

Blanton carries a cloud over him to the Phillies

Blanton.jpg

I was skeptical when I heard this one, Joe Blanton to the Phillies? Is
this the ‘A’ list pitcher that GM Pat Gillick was referring to ? I
somehow think maybe Blanton isn’t an ‘A’ lister, in fact I think the
A’s may be happy to see him gone. He did have 16 wins in 2006 however,
and that may be cause for the sun to shine in on this deal. The problem
is though, Blanton has been terrible this year! Is he hurt? What is the
reason for his demise this year.

The 2008 Oakland A’s are a
51-44 ballclub at the break, they’ve been winning games. Blanton has a
big 12 losses for them this year, does this remind you of anyone on the
Phillies staff? Blanton’s era is in the high 4′s, like the 5+ of Mr. Adam Eaton’s
ERA, this is certainly no cause for celebration. Maybe the change will
do him good, I sure hope so because most of the pitchers that Gillick
has acquired have been busts. Busts with a capital ‘B’ – I don’t know
but I think another pitcher couldv’e served the Phillies better than a
guy who is having his worst year of his career and he’s only been
pitching for about 5 seasons. Does this kind of remind you of the year
that Brett Myers is having?

Blanton has 70 Earned Runs given up
already, this isn’t a good sign considering no one else in the A’s
pitching staff has over 45 to this point of the All Star break. A lot
of tough luck for Blanton maybe, but that is giving him every benefit
of all doubt that hangs over him. Yes, Blanton has a cloud following
him, and I hope he loses it when he’s down in Florida this weekend! Oh
yes, and ESPN sports predicts him to go 9-20 for the rest of the year
if he keeps up like he has been going.

Chase has huge All Star Error, was that the Chase we know?

utley_800x600a.jpg

Chase Utley may have been very nervous when he was announced at the
Home Run Derby on Monday night. He was so nervous, he actually cursed
the fans who voted him into the position in the first place. If that
wasn’t bad enough, it made national headlines and was talked about in
length today on sports radio stations in Philly and around the country.

Utley has got to learn not to do things like this, an apology
was issued, but the damage was done. He’s on National television and curses the loudly as he is welcomed onto the field by the PA announcer. He sounded like a spoiled
multi-millionaire that didn’t get what he wanted. What he wanted was
cheers, and adulation. Well, Chase is an all star but he’s far from the
Hall of Fame still and he should learn that it’s the fans that support his
baseball habit and keep his accustomed to his ‘style’ of living.

In Philadelphia, Utley has been known as the quiet ‘superstar’. Almost
like a baseball god really. He doesn’t say too much in the press and
when he does it usually some recap of a play of some other quote that
makes a great sound bite but may not be the way we really know about
the player. We all assume he’s a great character kind of guy, but this
incident puts a big ***** into that persona. Yes, after last night I
think Utley gets looked at in a different light. The quiet trust is
gone.

Yes, this was a error, and yes everyone is human and
makes mistakes, but Utley uttering the words, “Boo???…. F$$k You’ on
the worldwide broadcast of the All Star game in 2008 has got to be one
of the worst moments in Philly baseball history. I don’t care if every
fan in the stadium was booing Chase, come on there was a lot of Mets
fans in attendance there at the All Star game you can expect a lot of
boos from them at least.

Chase, I am a fan of your play
on the field, but you made a huge error here. It practically
overshadowed the whole All Star game in Philly on the sports radio
stations and around the office coolers today. It was wrong, and we
heard you apologize but I think you may need some help, perhaps all the
awards are going to your head or your angry. Maybe anger management
class? You did a tremendous disservice to yourself, and put a huge
cloud up over you for some time to come not to mention a black eye to
Philadelphia.

Phillies make it into All Star Break in 1st place

This is sometimes called the first half of the season to the All Star
Break, it actually is a little more than the official half way mark
which is 81 games, but at the All Star Break the Phillies find
themselves still in first place with a slim lead over the Marlins and
the Mets. Thanks to Pat Burrell this afternoon at Citizen’s Bank Park, the Phillies won the game over the Dbacks in convincing style 6-3 with a great effort by pitcher Cole Hamels and the rest of the team to make it happen.

The Phillies go into the break with 52 wins, not
too bad for a team that most didn’t pick to front run with the division
lead by now. The Mets have been pouring it on over the last 8 games and
have won all of them in this critical time to surge forward to the top
near the Phillies. They can make it 9 in a row with a game to be played
tonight in the last game to be played leading up to the All Star Game
on Tuesday night, and the Home Run Derby on Monday night.

The Home Run derby should be interesting, the Phillie player with the
most home runs isn’t in the All Star game even though he leads the
league in HR’s and RBI’s. Who would figure that Ryan Howard wouldn’t be
in the game this year. The Cubbies will have 8 players in the All Star
game, and this is probably why we don’t get to see Burrell, or Howard
in this years All Star Game. A team should be limited to 5 players
maximum to spread it around a bit more and give the fans more of the
players from different teams. Yes, the Cubs have played great this
year, but 8 players in the game? That is a bit much.

On the All Star Game itself, it is the last time around for the
original ‘Yankee Stadium’ – the House that Ruth Built! This new stadium
can become known for the stadium that corporate America took over
Yankee Stadium with all the wildly high prices they will be charing for
tickets there. So much for the little guy, the guy who like the Yankees
and now with the advent of $2500 a game luxury box seats, where is he
to go now? Here is a quote from ESPN regarding the new pricing of seats
at the new Yankee Stadium next year:

NEW YORK — Those $250 box seats at Yankee Stadium will seem inexpensive in 2009.

The
New York Yankees will charge $500 to $2,500 for seats near home plate
in the first five-to-eight rows of their new ballpark. They already
have commitments from ticket-buyers for all 122 of the front-row seats.

Lonn
Trost, the team’s chief operating officer, sent a letter to season
ticket-holders on March 14, outlining premium seating in the new $1.3
billion ballpark and inquiring if fans wanted to upgrade. The team’s
Web site touts the premium areas as “an exclusive experience for those
with discerning taste who seek the very best that life has to offer.”

Trost said Friday the team already had received more than 3,000 upgrade requests for next year.

“It was a remarkable response,” he said.

In
the final season of the current Yankee Stadium, the team has 162
Legends seats ringing the infield mostly in two rows, with tickets
priced up to $1,000 a game. Behind that are 3,000 Field Championship
seats, which sold for $250 a game this year as part of season tickets.
Those same seats cost just $25 in 1996.

The new ballpark will
have 1,800 Legends Field Suite seats in 25 sections ringing home plate,
with seats 20 feet closer to the infield than the current stadium. Food
and nonalcoholic drinks are included in the ticket price, and there
will be a private entrance, elevator and concourse.

So enjoy this game true Yankees fans, the rent is going up and if you don’t have the dough, you won’t be in the seat.

More posts on the Phillies coming up in the next two days for the All Star break numbers!
